It wasn't just another day at Sagtikos Manor in Bay Shore, it was the Annual Collectibles and Antiques Show. Rare gems, of every kind, were on display throughout the grounds of this historic home that George Washington stayed at in 1790 during his tour of Long Island. I played on these grounds as a child, and the smell of wild honeysuckle, that still grows there, brings me right back to those early tender days.
Sagtikos Manor is a historic home located in West Bay Shore in Suffolk County, New York. It is a long, eclectic structure which has been extensively enlarged by additions and alterations during its long and active life as a residence. The original section was built around 1697 and is a one and a one-half story, timber-framed structure with a gable roof. Additions occurred through the early 20th century. Also on the property is a carriage house, caretaker's cottage, buttery, potting shed, formal gardens, and the Thompson-Gardiner family cemetery.
One collector, in particular, caught my eye. Maybe it was the necklace he was wearing. John Cassi and his Random Relics had some very interesting antique collectible oddities on display, so I walked up to his table and introduced myself. We started to talk about an item that piqued my curiosity. I wasn't sure what it was, but I had a hunch. "What do you think it is?" he asked as he opened up the wooden carved case. It was an opium kit, as I had suspected. It was completely in-tact. He told me it was probably from China considering its design and age. It must have been over 100 years old. The history of opium in China began with the use of opium for medicinal purposes during the 7th century. In the 17th century, the practice of mixing opium with tobacco for smoking spread from Southeast Asia, creating a far greater demand. I wondered who used this, and how it remained in one piece all these years.
Considering that Sunday was not just Father's Day, but Juneteenth as well, it was great to step back in time when America was a very different place. To know ourselves is to know our history. Sagtikos Manor is a good reminder of where we come from.
