Long, Beautiful Hair

SKYLARK'S ARTICLE OF THE WEEK - LONG, BEAUTIFUL HAIR

We change as we age, and so does our hair. Shedding, breaking, and thinning hair can be traumatic to our older self. When we're young, our hair is generally thicker and more lustrous. It defines our appearance. We obsess about it. Dying, frosting, blow drying, and a variety of hair products can dry out our beautiful tresses. Capelli bellissimi!

It can be devastating when our hair begins to change as we get older. What was once shiny, healthy hair can become damaged, dry, and brittle. But there is help for our crowning jewel.

In my monthly June vlog, I talk about some hair products I'm currently researching: Take a listen:

Hair needs antioxidants. They can boost scalp circulation, strengthen hair, soothe inflammation, extend hair growth, and neutralize free radicals. Some of the products I'm currently researching are Keranique Hair Growth System (www.keranique.com), Humby Organics (www.humbyorganics.com), and Nutrafol (www.nutrafol.com). I recently discovered As I Am products from a gal I follow on Instagram. She has amazing, thick, voluminous hair. Each of these products are designed to grow thicker, healthier hair. I haven't made my decision yet about which product I'll choose.

Throughout history, hair styles have come and gone. When Farah Fawcett came on the scene in the 70's, everyone wanted her hairstyle. It was the first major hair revolution since the hippies, and her iconic look took the world by storm. I spent countless hours blow-drying my hair to look like her. Everyone wanted to look like the one and only Farah.

Here are some images of hair throughout another time long ago and far away.

Hair thins as we age due to a combination of factors, including the natural aging process of hair follicles, hormonal changes, and the impact of genetics. Hair follicles, which are responsible for hair growth, gradually slow down and may eventually stop producing new hair as we age. This can lead to a reduction in hair density and a noticeable thinning of the hair. Here's a more detailed breakdown:

  • Hair Follicle AgingHair follicles naturally age, and their production of new hair slows down over time. This is a natural process, and it's why many people experience hair thinning as they get older.
  • Hormonal ChangesHormonal fluctuations, especially during menopause in women, can impact hair growth. Menopause can lead to a decrease in estrogen, a hormone that supports healthy hair growth, and an increase in testosterone, which can contribute to male pattern baldness in women.
  • GeneticsHeredity plays a significant role in hair loss. If there's a family history of hair thinning or balding, it's more likely to occur in individuals as they age.
  • Reduced DensityAs we age, some hair follicles may stop producing hair altogether, leading to reduced density. Additionally, hair strands may become finer and weaker, making them more prone to breakage and loss.
  • Nutritional Deficiencies: Inadequate nutrition can also contribute to hair thinning. As we age, we may have difficulty absorbing nutrients, and a lack of essential vitamins and minerals can weaken hair and lead to increased shedding.

Here's a good article I recently read about hair loss:

I always enjoy the history of things, and hair is no different. The history of it is rich and multifaceted, encompassing biological, cultural, and social dimensions. This overview illustrates how hair has been a vital aspect of human identity and culture throughout history:

In the 60's, the hippies wore long hair. It was part of the rebellious counter-culture. The perm dominated the 80's, and the Mullet became popular for men. Dreadlocks were unique and edgy. The movie 10, although released in 1979, introduced Bo Derek in brades that would through the decade. With each generation comes a new hairstyle that defines it. Long, beautiful hair.

Whatever style you choose, hair is a big deal.

Peace and Love,

Skylark

At 60 and Beyond, hair still matters. I will always love big hair!

LYRICS

Almost cut my hair
It happened just the other day
It's gettin' kinda long
I coulda said it wasn't in my way
But I didn't and I wonder why
I feel like letting my freak flag fly
Yes, I feel like I owe it to someone

Must be because I had a flu for Christmas
And I'm not feeling up to par
It increases my paranoia
Like looking at my mirror and seeing a police car
But I'm not giving in an inch to fear
'Cause I promised myself this year
I feel like I owe it to someone

When I finally get myself together
I'm going to get down in that sunny southern weather
And I'll find a place inside to laugh
Separate the wheat from the chaff
I feel like I owe it
To someone, yeah
