SKYLARK'S ARTICLE OF THE WEEK - KISMET
As part of my on-going summer series, Ecco L'Estate (Here's Summer), I'm once again writing about another beach. Kismet on Fire Island. The word means destiny, fate, but this beach is paradise.
We planned on heading out towards the North Fork of Long Island this past Saturday, but we got a late start, so we decided on staying local. Our town has access to the Fire Island Ferries, so it's an easy day trip. Once you step off the ferry there, you feel as though you are on vacation. Just a twenty-minute ride from the Bay Shore docks to this vast strip of land is worth the price. Everything is up this year, including the ferry. I still think it's a good bang for your buck.
Fire Island consists of many small beach communities, and each one is unique. Most are inhabited by summer residences while some welcome day-trippers. Some of the towns even have year-round residents. We chose to visit Kismet on this day. It's familiar to us as we spent a lot of time there in our youth.
Fire Island is a thin Atlantic Ocean barrier island off the southern shore of Long Island. It’s known for protected beaches interspersed with seasonal resort communities. On the western tip, Robert Moses State Park offers four different beaches that are accessible by car. Each is unique and a personal preference. Field 2 has a section where surfers meet and generally draws a younger crowd. It's also great for family gatherings in the barbeque area. It features a nine-hole pitch and putt golf course, too. Field 3 is more of a family beach that is calmer and quieter. There's a beautiful white wooden snack bar there. Field 4 is a place for anyone and everyone, and Field 5, my personal favorite, has access to the iconic 19th century Fire Island Lighthouse. You can walk to Kismet from here if you want, and there are also pedi-cabs for a fun ride. The other beaches along Fire Island are accessible only by ferry. From Bay Shore, you can get the ferry to Kismet, Saltaire, Fair Harbor, Atlantique, Dunewood, Ocean Beach, Seaview, and Ocean Bay Park.
Here's a more detailed breakdown:
Further east, there are a few more beaches on Fire Island accessible by ferry out of Sayville. These include Cherry Grove, Fire Island Pines, Water Island, and Sailors Haven/Sunken Forest. All of these beaches offer tranquility and beauty.
Here's a breakdown:
There's one more amazing beach accessible by ferry out of Patchogue called Watch Hill. This Fire Island beach offers a variety of outdoor activities and amenities including a campground, marina, nature trails, and proximity to the Otis Pike Fire Island High Dune Wilderness. This is a great place for nature lovers.
If you're looking to get away, but don't want to go too far, look no further. Fire Island feels like it's far away, but it's really close to home.
Peace and Love,
Skylark
At 60 and Beyond, traveling too far can be stressful, but taking a ferry to Fire Island can feel stress free.
