The Sun Will Come Out Tomorrow

SKYLARK'S ARTICLE OF THE WEEK - THE SUN WILL COME OUT TOMORROW

It feels like it's been raining since January. Troppa pioggia! Too much rain!

I live on Long Island, and weather patterns are changing. As of June 10, 2025, my hometown of Bay Shore has received 17.93 inches of rainfall so far this year. This is slightly below the year-to-date average of 19.84 inches. It doesn't feel that way, but here's a monthly breakdown of rainfall totals in Bay Shore for 2025 compared to the 30-year average. Check out your hometown to see how soggy it's been. Just google it.

Representing Bay Shore:

  • January: 1.03" (73% below average)
  • February: 3.80" (13% above average)
  • March: 5.03" (12% above average)
  • April: 1.84" (55% below average)
  • May: 6.24" (79% above average)
  • June (as of June 10th): 1.66" (57% below average - note that the June rainfall total is only for the portion of the month that has passed)

Whatever happened to "April showers bring May flowers", a phrase generally attributed to Thomas Tusser, an English poet and farmer. He wrote a short poem, "Sweet April showers, do spring May flowers," in his book, "A Hundred Good Points of Husbandry". While Chaucer's "The Canterbury Tales" also contains a line related to this concept, Tusser's is more commonly cited as the origin of the proverb. Here's a more detailed breakdown:

  • Thomas Tusser: the mid-16th century, Thomas Tusser, a poet and farmer, penned the phrase "Sweet April showers, do spring May flowers" in his book, "A Hundred Good Points of Husbandry".
  • Chaucer's influence: While Chaucer's "The Canterbury Tales" also contains a similar sentiment about April showers, Tusser's specific mention of May flowers and his more direct phrasing are often seen as the source of the popular saying.
  • Evolution of the phrase: Over time, the phrase has been shortened and adapted, but the core meaning of "April showers" leading to the beauty of "May flowers" has remained consistent.

"April showers bring May flowers" is a proverb that has both a literal and metaphorical meaning. Literally, it refers to the rainy season in April providing the necessary moisture for flowers to bloom in May. Metaphorically, it suggests that difficult times or challenges ("April showers") can lead to positive outcomes or rewards ("May flowers"). But the rainy season seems to be shifting.

Long Island is experiencing a shift in its rainy season. While overall precipitation is expected to increase, more of it will fall as rain rather than snow, especially as temperatures continue to rise. This means that winters may be wetter, but with less snow, and summers may have more rainy days. Here's a more detailed look:

  • Winter Precipitation Increase: The New York State Climate Impacts Assessment projects that winter precipitation will increase by 5-18% by the 2050s and 11-28% by the 2080s compared to the 1981-2010 average.
  • More Rain, Less Snow: As temperatures rise, a larger portion of winter precipitation will fall as rain rather than snow.
  • Annual Precipitation Increase: Annual precipitation is also expected to increase on Long Island, by 4-11% by the 2050s and 6-16% by the 2080s.
  • Summer Rainfall: While the exact timing and frequency of heavy rain events in summer are still being studied, there's a projected increase in total precipitation during the summer months. This is bad news for beach bums like me.
  • Shift in Rainfall Patterns: The shift towards more rain and less snow, coupled with a potential increase in summer rainfall, suggests a change in the traditional Long Island climate pattern.

A rainy day can be a good day to do something you've been putting off like finishing that book you started reading last year, or cleaning out your closets, getting rid of unused items around your home, or trying on clothing that has not been worn in a while. Donating to those in need is always a good idea, and a rainy day can be the best time to fill up some boxes and bags of goodies you're no longer using to give to others. "One man's junk is another man's treasure."

Gardens need water, too, but this has been an especially wet season. My peony still haven't bloomed. I've got five buds that are just ready to burst. My roses are doing beautifully, however. Some plants and flowers can actually be harmed by too much rain. Moisture can cause root rot and kill flowers and plants. Be sure to look up how to care for specific flora. This year, I've put coffee grounds in my garden soil. I think its helping.

No matter what you choose to do on a rainy day, be rest assured that the sun will come out tomorrow. Bet your bottom dollar.

Goditi Ogni Giorno! Enjoy each day!

Peace and Love,

Skylark

At 60 and Beyond, the sun is a necessary source of Vitamin D. Make sure to step outside even when it's cloudy.

SKYLARK'S PICK OF THE WEEK

This Sunday is Father's Day and Sagtikos Manor in Bay Shore is hosting its annual Antiques, Vintage & Collectibles event. There's something here for everyone from vintage books and toys to furniture and paintings. Bring Dad and the entire family. This is a special place to spend Father's Day together.

 SKYLARK'S HIGHLIGHT OF THE WEEK

I love gardening, and this year, some of my flowers have been slower to bloom. This morning, I noticed my Tiger Lilies are starting to blossom. That is the highlight of my week. What's yours?

SKYLARK'S INSPIRATIOINAL QUOTE OF THE WEEK

Rain is often associated with beauty, tranquility, and a sense of cleansing, but also with the challenges and struggles of life. Here are some quotes about rain and some wisdom from Dolly Parton:

  • "Into each life some rain must fall"
  • "Without rain, nothing grows"
  • "Tears of joy are like the summer rain drops pierced by sunbeams"
  • "The best thing one can do when it is raining is to let it rain"
  • "Some people walk in the rain, others just get wet"
  • "Rain, rain, go away, come again another day"

SKYLARK'S PRAYER OF THE WEEK

Dear God,

Please protect the flowers from too much rainfall.

Amen.

LYRICS

'Twas just a garden in the rain
Close to a little leafy lane
A touch of colour 'neath skies of gray!

The raindrops kissed the flower beds
The blossoms raised their thirsty heads
A perfumed thank you they seem to say!

Surely here was charm beyond compare to view
Maybe it was just that I was there
With you!

'Twas just a garden in the rain
But then the sun came out again
And sent us happily on our way!

Surely here was charm beyond compare to view
But, maybe it was just that you were there dear
You were so lovely!

'Twas just a garden in the rain
But then the sun came out again
And sent us happily on our way!

Just a garden in the rain!
