Faith on Palm Sunday and Beyond

Palm Sunday is significant to me as it commemorates the entrance of Christ into Jerusalem, when palm branches were placed in his path before his arrest on Holy Thursday and his crucifixion on Good Friday. It thus marks the beginning of Holy Week, the final week of Lent. It is a Christian moveable feast that falls on the Sunday before Easter.

As I grow older, 60 and beyond, my faith deepens. Learning about Christianity is important to me as it marks time and history. I find comfort in my faith, and my life has changed for the better because of it. There is a sense of surrender when you have profound faith and, somehow, things start to fall into place without much effort. It is a presence that resonates throughout every aspect of my life. As Bob Marley sang, "There's a natural mystic blowing through the air." How does the earth continue to turn on its axis? Who can explain a sunrise or sunset, and how do our heavenly bodies exist in midair? It's the natural flow of the Universe, but I believe it doesn't exist on its own. I think Bob Marley was right.

Do you believe in God? Even if you don't, what do you believe in? If you find yourself contemplating the presence of a higher power, then you probably have some belief about God. If you look up the meaning of God, you might find something like this:

"In monotheistic thought, God is usually conceived of as the supreme being, creator, and principal object of faith. God is usually conceived of as being omnipotent, omniscient, omnipresent and omnibenevolent as well as having an eternal and necessary existence. God is most often held to be incorporeal with said characteristic being related to conceptions of transcendence or immanence."

The next time you look up at the sky, I hope you find yourself pondering the existence of God as a force greater than life itself that guides us, watches over us, comforts us, and loves us.

Peace and Love,
