Swans on Skim Ice

There was skim ice on Brightwaters Lakes Monday morning. Skim ice is thin ice, but not the dangerous kind. Thin ice can be deceiving, and certainly life threatening, but there is no danger in skim ice. We immediately know what it is, that it will not carry our weight, so we don't go on it. But swans do. They are light enough to delicately perch themselves upon it. It might appear that way in this picture, but I think these swans are just enjoying "skimming."

Early morning at the lakes is a soothing start to the day. Each morning, as I take a ride around the main lake before heading to work, I am greeted by the wildlife that cohabitate there. On this particular morning, it seemed these two swans had the lake all to themselves as they serenely soaked up the winter air.

Swans feed in water and on land. They are almost entirely herbivorous, although they may eat small amounts of aquatic animals. In the water, food is obtained by up-ending or dabbling, and their diet is composed of the roots, tubers, stems and leaves of aquatic and submerged plants. Swans famously mate for life, and typically bond even before they reach sexual maturity.

It may not be long before the lakes freeze over, and the swans are replaced by ice skaters. This is a long tradition on Brightwaters Lakes and one that brings children and adults together to skate instead of skim. Have an ice day. Okay, I borrowed that one, but I do own my own skates.
