Life is a Cabaret Old Chum

SKYLARK'S ARTICLE OF THE WEEK - LIFE IS A CABARET OLD CHUM

I love dress-up. I have quite a collection of dresses, jewelry, shoes, and hats. I've collected these things throughout my life. I guess it all began as a young girl when I would play dress-up with my girlfriends in my garage. We'd spend hours putting on make-up and getting pretty for the day of play together. Now I have capes, masks, and costumes. Life is a Cabaret old chum.

Cabaret has always been appealing to me. It evokes freedom to express one's self in costume and song. It's a place where people come together to let go of their day-to-day drudgery and escape the burdens of life. A Cabaret is a nightclub or restaurant where entertainment is performed and self-expression is embraced.

Set in 1929–1930 Berlin during the twilight of the Jazz Age as the Nazis rise to power, the musical Cabaret focuses on the hedonistic nightlife at the seedy Kit Kat Klub and revolves around American writer Clifford Bradshaw's relations with English cabaret performer Sally Bowles. A subplot involves the doomed romance between German boarding house owner Fräulein Schneider and her elderly suitor Herr Schultz, a Jewish fruit vendor. Overseeing the action is the Master of Ceremonies at the Kit Kat Klub, and the club itself serves as a metaphor for ominous political developments in late Weimar Germany. Scandalous.

The original Broadway production opened on November 20, 1966, at the Broadhurst Theatre in New York City and became a box office hit that ran for 1,166 performances. The award-winning musical inspired numerous subsequent productions as well as the 1972 film of the same name. There's a revival called Cabaret at The Kit Kat Club opening on Broadway in April 2024. I can't wait to go to the Cabaret. I'll wear my favorite costume. Join me.

Getting dressed up and stepping out is something we tend to do less frequently as we age, especially over 60. But I think it's always a good idea to keep some fancy clothing in your closet just in case you want to step out and into fantasy. It gives us a chance to get out of our own identity and escape into another world. Dress up is not just for kids. But cabaret is for adults only.

Peace and Love,

Skylark

At 60 and Beyond, dust off that old costume and get dressed up and step out. We need to continue to have fun as we age.

SKYLARK'S INSPIRATIONAL QUOTE OF THE WEEK

"Fashion is not something that exists in dresses only. Fashion is in the sky, in the street. Fashion has to do with ideas, the way we live, what is happening."
