Rock Concerts Rule

SKYLARK'S ARTICLE OF THE WEEK - ROCK CONCERTS RULE

Rock concerts rule, especially over 60. Growing up in the 70's, our home was filled with great music. My brother loved The Doors, and my mother loved The Beatles. This era put out some of the best rock music ever made, and it has stood the test of time. Especially Led Zeppelin. I think they're the best rock band ever.

I'm not a big fan of rock cover bands. I'd rather see the real thing. But The Led Zeppelin Tribute Band, Misty Mountain, changes all that. This Long Island based band is filling venues, and there's good reason.

I stepped out on Wednesday night to Wantagh Park to see Misty Mountain. The sprawling field was lined with beach chairs, and the crowd was mostly people 60 and beyond. What else would you expect? We grew up on Led Zeppelin. We found our spot just as the band started to play. The first note was immediately familiar, and the crowd began to stand. I walked up to stage and started to dance. Ah, it felt so good. I made some new friends, too. That's the best part of a rock concert. I never made it back to my chair.

Front man and lead vocalist extraordinaire, Ed Terry, has the range and inflections of Robert Plant. Terry is capable of hitting the notes and screams that very few singers out there can match. He has the chops and the good looks. His tall, lean build captures the audience with his charismatic stage presence. Ed Terry is a rock star!

Guitarist virtuoso, Elliot Negrin, painstakingly emulates the genius of
Jimmy Page. He does this through a myriad of special tunings on various electric
and acoustic guitars. In addition, he uses other song-specific tools such as a
violin bow and glass slide to capture the essence of the music. He nails the nuance of Page.

One of the most grueling feats in the Zeppelin universe are the locomotive rhythms
of the late, great John Bonham. Shawn Murray, an internationally renowned
drummer, is up to the task. His attention to the details and Bonham’s
odd-meter beats and dynamic drum-fills makes him a vital member of Misty
Mountain. He holds down the rhythm section with virtuosity.

Al Levy, the bassist, has a huge supportive role which he shares with keyboardist,
Stu Waters, the genius of arguably the most unsung hero of Led Zeppelin, John
Paul Jones. Al has been honing his skills with careful precision to lay down the
bottom end for Misty Mountain. As with Elliot, he utilizes several different tools
and playing styles in his arsenal to accurately represent the multiple time-periods
of Led Zeppelin's compositions. Awesome!

Last but not least, Stu Waters accomplishes one of the most recognizable
musical ingredients of Zeppelin's sound; the keyboards. As a highly respected
accompanist, Stu knows exactly where the proper voicing and colors are needed
to complete the Zeppelin sound spectrum. He tailors his synthesizer to produce
the organ, mellotron, clavinet, and electric piano sounds which Jones used on
Led Zeppelin’s most beloved songs.

In addition to the gifted musicians seen on stage, there is talent offstage that is vital to the career of Misty Mountain. JT brings his technical and musical prowess in the support domain. His meticulous guitar management and musical advice is instrumental to the sound of Misty Mountain. It all comes together in an electric alchemy.

All of the members of this band collectively and synergistically blend to recreate the
experience of one of the greatest rock bands of all time. Live concerts by Led Zeppelin may be a thing of the past, but Misty Mountain is very present. I'm Going to California.

Check out www.mistymountainrocks.com for a list of shows coming up this summer. I'll most likely be there on the dance floor rocking out to an air guitar!

Peace and Love,

Skylark

At 60 and Beyond, a live rock concert is one of the most enjoyable experiences. It makes you feel young again.

Lyrics

Walking in the park just the other day, baby,

What do you, what do you think I saw?

Crowds of people sitting on the grass,

With flowers in their hair said.

Hey boy, do you wanna score?

And you know how it is,

I really don't know what time it was, woh-oh-oh,

So I asked them if I could stay awhile.

I didn't notice, but it had got very dark and I was really,

Really out of my mind,

Just then a policeman stepped up to me and asked us said,

Please, hey, would we care to all get in line, get in line.

Well, you know, they asked us to stay for tea and have some fun, woh-oh-oh,

He said that his friends would all drop by,

Why don't you take a good look at yourself and describe what you see,

And baby, baby, baby, do you like it?

There you sit, sitting spare like a book on a shelf rusting,

Not trying to fight it,

You really don't care if they're coming, woh-oh-oh,

I know that it's all a state of mind.

If you go down in the streets today, baby, you better,

You better open your eyes,

Folk down there really don't care, really don't care, don't care, really don't,

Which, which way the pressure lies.

So I've decided what I'm gonna do now,

So I'm packing my bags for the Misty Mountains,

Where the spirits go now,

Over the hills where the spirits fly.

Uh, uh, uh,

Uh, uh, uh, uh,

Uh, uh, uh,

Uh, uh, uh, uh.

I really don't know,

I really don't know.
