A Walk in the Snow

SKYLARK'S FEATURED ARTICLE OF THE WEEK - A WALK IN THE SNOW

Taking a walk in the snow can be invigorating. The ducks love it, and so can you. Inhaling fresh air is such a good thing for our lungs. But it's also good for our mind, body, and soul. Walking is great in any season.

When it comes to exercise, running gets a lot of attention and runners are usually enthusiastic missionaries of the sport. And while running is a fantastic workout, not everyone can run or enjoys running. Walking is a great alternative, and it's easier on the body.

Whether you have joint, bone, or muscle issues, other acute or chronic health conditions, or simply don’t find running to be a form of exercise that appeals to you, you might find that walking can be a much more attractive and safe workout for you. It's such a great way to take in the natural scenery and listen to the voice of nature. Leave your headphones at home.

Walking an hour a day is a great workout and affords many physical and mental health benefits. If you walk an hour a day, you’ll be covering a distance of 3 to 4 miles or more per day, depending on how fast you walk. If you do this consistently and walk an hour a day for a month or more, you’ll build up a solid aerobic base. This means that you will have a certain degree of cardiovascular fitness that will enable you to do other forms of cardio exercise at a similar level of intensity without being completely winded. Walking an hour a day builds your stamina, conditions your heart and lungs, and strengthens your legs so that you have a good foundation to handle physical activity. Walking uses your hamstrings, glutes, quads, calves, and core to varying degrees, depending on the incline and speed at which you are walking. Walking uphill can be a great firmer. Walking is a form of aerobic exercise, which has been found to confer quite a few health benefits such as reducing blood pressure, lowering LDL (“bad”) cholesterol, increasing HDL (“good”) cholesterol, increasing insulin sensitivity, and reducing blood sugar levels. Many ask, can you lose weight by walking an hour a day? Physical activity like walking an hour a day burns calories so it can help you lose weight or maintain a healthy weight. If you suffer from chronic low back pain, osteoarthritis in your knees or hips, or have some other form of localized or generalized musculoskeletal pain, walking an hour a day may help alleviate your discomfort. In addition to the numerous physical health benefits of walking, walking an hour a day is wonderful for your mental health. Studies have found that walking regularly is associated with better emotional health compared to infrequent walking. Get out your walking shoes. It's one of the best natural remedies for the winter blues. Spring's coming!

Andiamo a fare una camminata. Let's go for a walk.

Peace and Love,

Skylark

At 60 and Beyond, walking has many benefits that are easy on the mind, body, and soul. It takes us out of ourselves and into the natural world.

SKYLARK'S PICK OF THE WEEK - BRIGHTWATER'S LAKES

Brightwaters Lakes is one of the most beautiful places around. As many of you know, I drive around the lakes each morning on my way to work and take pictures. Some are posted here. The name "Brightwaters" was derived from the Indian name "Wohseepee" which means the place of bright waters, and it was so called because of the chain of lakes, all spring-fed and offering clear, cold water, which the local tribes used for drinking and cooking. The local tribes may be gone, but the local ducks and birds who call these lakes home still love to drink and swim in these waters.
