The Endless Summer

SKYLARK'S ARTICLE OF THE WEEK - THE ENDLESS SUMMER

In my mind, summer never ends. The endless summer. I look forward to it all year long. Today was the first day of school for most kids. I could see buses pull up outside my living room window as parents scurried to greet their children. This marks the unofficial end of summer, but technically, we have a couple of more weeks. I hope we have an Indian Summer.

It was one of the hottest summers on record, and it finally rained today. The grass and flowers were so thirsty, and you can almost see their vibrant colors returning. There were plenty of beach days, and I went as much as I possibly could. It's hard to believe that the weather is changing and pumpkin spice everything is everywhere. I'm not ready. My beach chair and umbrella are still in the trunk of my car, and there's still sand on them. My beach bag is still packed with my towel, suntan lotion, and bathing suit. I'm still ready for more beach days.

Unfortunately, I "ended" my summer with COVID. Yes. COVID. I knew I had it even before I tested positive last week. It felt different. I've read enough about this virus that while I was concerned, I was not afraid. I've been vaccinated and boosted, so I felt fairly safe. It knocked me out for several days and then the slow incline back to myself began. I join the league of more than a million people around the world who have either had COVID, died of COVID, or are still dealing with COVID, as I am. I have a deeper regard for all human life and realize how in a moment, everything can change. And I have profound respect for the healthcare workers who are there to assist us in getting back to good health if we are so lucky. Thank you.

This virus will not dampen my spirits or take away the memories of a splendid summer. I only wish I could have enjoyed Labor Day weekend. Thank you to anyone who had to work on Labor Day. No one should have had to work, but I suppose the essential workers are always needed. I am grateful to them for showing up. I'm not out of the woods just yet, but I can see the forest through the trees. Soon.

Peace and Love,

Skylark

SKYLARK'S PICK OF THE WEEK - HOME IS WHERE THE HEART IS

Home is where the heart is. We hear this proverb often. Nevertheless, it's much older than you probably think. In fact, its origins lie not in the English language at all, but in the Latin language and in ancient Roman times. It is a phrase that is usually deemed to have been coined by Pliny the Elder who was a Roman historian. Pliny the Elder wrote works on natural history (for instance, works on the habits of animals), however he also found time to philosophize about matters such as family life – it is from this latter strand in Pliny’s thought that we get the phrase, home is where the heart is. Pliny the Elder lived between 25 CE and 79 CE, which means that the phrase home is where the heart is is a very ancient one.

SKYLARK'S SONG OF THE WEEK - HOME by Michael Buble

Another summer day
Has come and gone away
In Paris and Rome
But I wanna go home, mmm
Maybe surrounded by
A million people, I
Still feel all alone
I just wanna go home
Oh, I miss you, you know
And I've been keeping all the letters
That I wrote to you
Each one a line or two
"I'm fine baby, how are you?"
Well I would send them but I know
That it's just not enough
My words were cold and flat
And you deserve more than that
Another aeroplane
Another sunny place
I'm lucky I know
But I wanna go home
Mmm, I got to go home
Let me go home
I'm just too far
From where you are
I wanna come home
And I feel just like:
I'm living someone else's life
It's like I just stepped outside
When everything was going right
And I know just why you could not
Come along with me
That this was not your dream
But you always believed in me
Another winter day
Has come and gone away
In even Paris and Rome
And I wanna go home
Let me go home
And I'm surrounded by
A million people, I
I still feel alone
Oh, let me go home
Oh, I miss you, you know
Let me go home
I've had my run
Baby, I'm done
I gotta go home
Let me go home
It'll all be all right
I'll be home tonight
I'm coming back home
