Believe You Can Change at Any Age

Believe you can change at any age because you can. We know that change is constant so why not embrace it and enjoy the journey. This is easier said than done for a lot of people, especially at 60 and beyond.

Did you ever think you'd be job hunting in your 60's? I didn't, but that's just what happened to me recently. I work for the State of New York at Farmingdale State College and have had the same position for seven years. I started to become restless recently and knew I needed a change. I'm not that far from retirement age and could have easily decided to stay where I was. I loved my job and enjoyed going to work, but that began to change in the past few months. I knew I wanted a new challenge, so I decided to look at the job listings and applied for a position in the campus library. The position of Library Clerk II was offered to me on the interview, and I started my new job on Thursday. I feel like I saved myself from being very unhappy where I was. On this same day, over 1,000 students graduated FSC as the Blue Angels roared overhead. What a glorious first day.

We never know when it's time to reinvent ourselves until it's time. It's something that we can't deny. We feel it in our body.  Have you ever acted on a “gut instinct” or been in a new situation that stretched your comfort zone? Likely you experienced a sensation in your stomach, from butterflies to downright terror. Maybe you actually held your hand over the area under your sternum—the location of the third chakra—in a common, unconscious response to fear or challenge. And perhaps afterward, you had a great feeling in your “gut,” a rush of power or adrenaline. These feelings of fear, power, or accessing a body-based intuition are all tied to the third, or solar plexus, chakra. The solar plexus chakra is located between the belly button and the heart where your ribs meet at the sternum. It is associated with the color yellow and relates to our sense of self, our role in the world, and a feeling of personal power. From here, we step forth to meet the world and fulfill our destiny. Having a healthy third chakra is essential to setting and achieving goals, having a healthy will and identity, and clear mental function.

I trusted my third chakra and set myself free to experience a new beginning. If you allow your body to "speak" to you, it will guide you to where you are supposed to be. So, the next time you are about to embark on a change, and you feel hesitant, get still and listen to your body. Believe you can change, and your body will tell you what to do.

Peace and Love,

Skylark
