It's that time of year again when we celebrate Mothers everywhere. Whether it's our biological mother, a good friend, or a relative, mothers come in many shapes and sizes. We cherish these women who brought us into the world or raised us as their own. A mother is love.
I am not a mother, but in many ways, I feel like one. I've always felt I could love any child, and I have many in my life. I live on a complex where there are many children, and I've come to know and love them. I enjoy hearing them play after school out on the big lawn in the center of our complex. One of the things I enjoy most is teaching them about the many flowers that grow in my garden. I explain my love for gardening and that just like a child, they need nurturing, tenderness, and love. Each Spring, the children gather at the edge of my garden and wait in excited anticipation for their lesson. One little boy told me he especially loves roses.
While some countries have a multi-century history of a day to celebrate mothers, the modern American version of the holiday began in the United States in the early 20th century at the initiative of Anna Jarvis who organized the first Mother's Day service of worship and celebration at Andrews Methodist Episcopal Church in Grafton, West Virginia, which serves as the International Mother's Day Shrine today. It is not directly related to the many traditional celebrations of mothers and motherhood that have existed throughout the world over thousands of years, such as the Greek cult to Cybele, the mother deity Rhea, the Roman festival of Hilaria, or the other Christian ecclesiastical Mothering Sunday celebration associated with the image of Mother Church. However, in some countries, Mother's Day is still synonymous with these older traditions. Mother's Day never goes out of style.
I wish each of you a beautiful Mother's Day filled with nurturing, tenderness, and love. Just like the flowers, Mother's need this, too. Thank you, Mom, and God Bless you.
Peace and Love,
Skylark
