National Day of Prayer

There is power in prayer, and this Thursday, May 5th, is National Day of Prayer. Faith is a big part of American culture. We are a diverse nation filled with people from various ethnicities with an eclectic assortment of beliefs. Americans are no stranger to faith, so it's no surprise that there's a day that has a theme all about these religious diversities.

Throughout history, there have been few national days of prayer. In fact, there were only a few noteworthy ones between the 1700s and the 1900s. The National Day of Prayer that we know today was established in 1952, and it was a co-founded effort between the United States Congress and President Harry S. Truman. Truman signed it into law, and every president since has signed a proclamation that encourages Americans to pray on the first Thursday of May each year since National Day of Prayer was founded. It stands as a day that continues the decision-making of the country’s founding fathers, which used the morals from biblical lessons in difficult situations. Basically, using God’s guidance to make important decisions in the country and for ourselves. Just like Thanksgiving and Christmas, the National Day of Prayer has become recognized by Americans nationwide. It's even marked in all Hallmark calendars. Hallmark has become an American institution.

Knowing that America was founded by people of European descent with predominantly Christian backgrounds, it’s understandable that this holiday was originally created to celebrate the Christian faith. National Day of Prayer was an effort to ask American citizens “to turn to God in prayer and meditation.” Throughout the history of our great nation, people from countries around the world call America home. National Day of Prayer is a day for all of us to pray no matter what religion we put our faith in. There is power in prayer. Power to the people.
