Compromise

Compromise is something we do every day, especially with family. It's inevitable that we will have to compromise our feelings for another, or compromise when there's something we want at a given moment versus what another wants. You get the idea. Compromise is an agreement or settlement of a dispute that is reached by each side making concessions. That can be difficult to do in the heat of the moment.

So how can we take a step back to look at both sides of a situation and come to an agreement that makes everyone happy? It could be as easy as asking yourself does something hold enough value to you at the moment or does giving in to another make you feel better. To compromise is to make a deal between different parties where each party gives up part of their demand. In arguments, compromise is a concept of finding agreement through communication, through a mutual acceptance of terms—often involving variations from an original goal or desire.

The next time you find yourself driving your point home, take a breath, stop talking, and ask yourself what you are willing to let go of to come to a settlement that gives both parties, more or less, what you want. That's compromise. Precisely.
