The Beauty That Surrounds Us

SKYLARK'S ARTICLE OF THE WEEK

I believe that knowledge, self-awareness, and beauty are the core of living life with balance. It is what my newsletter is all about. The beauty that surrounds us can elevate our mood and our lives.

I went on a bird walk Tuesday morning with The Great South Bay Audubon Society of which I'm a member. We went to Field 5 at Robert Moses and walked to the lighthouse. That walk never gets old. We saw a woodpecker, a hawk, a mockingbird, and a yellow-headed warbler, among other beauties. The bramble along the boardwalk is a haven for birds that a migrating now. Here's a mockingbird perched on a branch. She had the most beautiful bird call.

When I was younger, I spent most of my time in the woods around our neighborhood. When I wasn't in the woods, I was on the beach. But there was always something special about the wild landscape that surrounded our neighborhood. I especially remember the berry trees that attracted lots of birds. We ate them, too. We would collect them and have them with cereal the next morning. The bramble that grew freely left an indelible mark on me. Its natural beauty made such an impression that has lasted throughout my life. It is still a favorite of brush that surrounds us. Bellissimo!

Let's breakdown beauty.

Beauty is commonly described as a feature of objects that makes them pleasurable to perceive. Such objects include landscapes, sunsets, humans and works of art. Beauty, art and taste are the main subjects of aesthetics, one of the fields of study within philosophy. As a positive aesthetic value, it is contrasted with ugliness as its negative counterpart.

One difficulty in understanding beauty is that it has both objective and subjective aspects: it is seen as a property of things but also as depending on the emotional response of observers. Because of its subjective side, beauty is said to be "in the eye of the beholder". It has been argued that the ability on the side of the subject needed to perceive and judge beauty, sometimes referred to as the "sense of taste", can be trained and that the verdicts of experts coincide in the long run. This suggests the standards of validity of judgments of beauty are intersubjective, i.e. dependent on a group of judges, rather than fully subjective or objective.

Conceptions of beauty aim to capture what is essential to all beautiful things. Classical conceptions define beauty in terms of the relation between the beautiful object as a whole and its parts: the parts should stand in the right proportion to each other and thus compose an integrated harmonious whole. Hedonist conceptions see a necessary connection between pleasure and beauty, e.g. that for an object to be beautiful is for it to cause disinterested pleasure. Other conceptions include defining beautiful objects in terms of their value, of a loving attitude toward them or of their function.

No matter what, beauty surrounds us. It transforms us and can stimulate our emotions, elevating them to extreme pleasure. Whether it's a flower, landscape, a sunrise or sunset, the moon, a child, a woman or a man, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. As I get older, I see life grow more beautifully with each passing day. Make sure to step outside often and look around. Your sense of self will soar in the natural world.

Peace and Love,

Skylark
