Love is a four-letter word. It's a social phenomenon, a driving force, a mystery, an "itch we can't scratch", and whether we are aware of it or not, we are in constant pursuit of it. It is what binds us as humans. Whether it's the love of a romantic partner, a friend, a family member, or an animal, love stirs our emotions and can make us gitty.
Love can be a challenge to define at the level of how a person experiences it. Love can involve personal affection, sexual attraction, platonic admiration, brotherly loyalty, benevolent concern, or worshipful adoration. What is the origin of love? Some believe it's from God, as I do. Whatever you believe, it is undeniable that love can be powerful, elusive, and constant.
As many of you know, I do a first Monday-of-the-month vlog, 60 and Beyond with Skylark, where I discuss a variety of topics including well-being, happiness, goal setting, purpose, and so much more. This Monday, February 7th, I will talk about Love as we honor Valentine's Day this month. Saint Valentine (Italian: San Valentino; Latin: Valentinus) was a 3rd-century Roman saint, commemorated in Western Christianity on February 14th. From the High Middle Ages, his Saints' Day has been associated with a tradition of courtly love; a highly conventionalized medieval tradition of love between a knight and a married noblewoman, first developed by the troubadours of southern France and extensively employed in European literature of the time. The love of the knight for his lady was regarded as an ennobling passion and the relationship was typically unconsummated. Love has evolved.
If I speak in the tongues of men or of angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. If I give all I possess to the poor and give over my body to hardship that I may boast, but do not have love, I gain nothing.
Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.
Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away. For we know in part and we prophesy in part, but when completeness comes, what is in part disappears. When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put the ways of childhood behind me. For now we see only a reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known.
And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.
