The Big Fog

A mystical fog settled over Bay Shore on Thursday. From the Big Dig Out to the Big Fog, this week has been a roller-coaster of weather. Most of you probably spent last Saturday at home as the massive snowstorm dropped more than two feet of snow on Bay Shore, and across most of Long Island. It's one of the biggest snowstorms in the region in recent years. Thank you to all of the men and women who cleared our roads, sidewalks, parking lots, and highways.

Sometimes fog forms when warm air moves over a cold surface. Warm air moving over a snow-covered ground in winter is a prime example of advection fog. The air is cooled to saturation by the cold from the ground below cooling the air above. This type of fog can sometimes be seen as moving laterally along or near the ground. As I drove around Brightwaters Lakes on Thursday morning, the fog was lingering on the surface of the main lake as ducks and swans appeared suspended in motion. The foggy mist gave way to a mysterious landscape. It was mesmerizing.

The temperatures will rise and fall over the next week, and we're expecting some rain. This should wash away some of the snow that lingers. Enjoy the fairy-tale peacefulness of the sites that surround the bodies of water around us. It won't last forever, but fairy-tales can.

Peace and Love,

Skylark
