Apartment Living Over the Age of 60 Could be a Good Move

Are you over the age of 60 and own your own home? Are you thinking of selling and moving into an apartment, but have some hesitation? Do you feel that renting is throwing your money away? It might be a really good move. You won't have a mortgage to worry about anymore or a yard to keep up with. And, you won't have to shovel snow ever again.

I grew up in a beautiful, modest house in Bay Shore, just minutes from the beach. We had geraniums in our window boxes and a big backyard to play in. We built tree forts and go-carts and played hide-n-seek long into summer nights. Suburbia was exploding, and owning a home was the golden standard. Most were affordable for the average middle-class family and to city dwellers, this was Shangri-La. There's something about a house. It evokes comfort, warmth, a refuge from the world, and success. It's the ultimate adult dream, right? Maybe not over the age of 60.

I moved into the city after graduating college and gave up suburban life for the urban landscape and apartment living. This was my new home, and I grew accustomed to having neighbors on the other side of my bedroom wall. It gave me a sense of safety and contentment. This was adult life after leaving the nest of my family home. It was affordable, easy, and it felt cool. Apartment living has many perks such as low maintenance costs, smaller commitment, fewer surprise expenses, and fewer headaches in general. I eventually moved back to Bay Shore and still live in an apartment. It's what feels like home to me now.

Bay Shore and the surrounding towns are burgeoning with new rental properties, and a lot of them are located in neighborhoods with easy access to mass transit, making living easier and accessibility within reach. Houses can be too much work as we get older and can be costly with repairs and maintenance. And, let's face it, we don't have the same energy we used to have. After all these years of living in a house, maybe apartment life is a good choice for you, too. So, if you're thinking of selling your home and considering apartment living, it could be your best move yet. Home is where the heart is.
