SKYLARK'S ARTICLE OF THE WEEK - I SAY A LITTLE PRAYER FOR YOU

We can't underestimate the power of prayer. We call upon it in times of crisis. We can pray individually or in groups. And we can pray for others we don't know. It's popular to pray for world peace. More recently, people everywhere have been praying for the return of Nancy Guthrie. I say a little prayer for you.

Prayer is a solemn request for help or expression of thanks addressed to God or another deity. Prayer is not meditation or passive reflection; it is direct intention. It is the communication of the human soul with the creator.

Why Do People Pray

Prayer is a deeply personal and spiritual act that serves many purposes, both practical and spiritual. Across religious traditions, it is often seen as a way to connect with the divine, seek guidance, and express gratitude.

1. To Communicate with God
For many, prayer is the primary way to speak and listen to God. It’s described as the most intimate form of communication, allowing believers to share their thoughts, feelings, and needs directly with their Creator.

2. To Seek God’s Will and Guidance
Prayer helps individuals discern God’s will, especially when decisions are important or when the path forward is unclear. Scripture encourages asking for wisdom and discernment (James 1:5) and seeking God’s guidance in all matters.

3. To Express Gratitude and Praise
Thanksgiving is a core part of prayer. People pray to give thanks for blessings, provision, and protection, and to praise God for His goodness and faithfulness.

4. To Request Help and Provision
Prayer is a means of asking for physical, emotional, or spiritual needs—such as healing, protection, strength, or resources. It’s also a way to intercede for others, praying for their needs and well-being.

5. To Strengthen Faith and Trust
Prayer demonstrates trust in God’s promises. It’s a way to affirm belief that God will work in accordance with His will, even when outcomes are not immediately visible.

6. To Build a Closer Relationship with God
Regular prayer deepens intimacy with the divine, fostering a sense of closeness and dependence on God. This relationship can bring peace, courage, and purpose.

7. To Overcome Challenges and Sin
Prayer can be a tool for seeking forgiveness, overcoming temptation, and breaking spiritual barriers. It’s also used to pray for strength to resist sin and to live according to God’s standards.

 8. To Align Hearts with God’s Purpose
Ultimately, prayer is about aligning one’s life with God’s will. It’s not just about getting what we want, but about inviting God’s will to be done in our lives.

People pray to connect with the divine, seek guidance, express gratitude, request help, strengthen faith, deepen relationships, overcome challenges, and live in alignment with God’s purpose. Whether in a religious or personal context, prayer remains a central act of spiritual life.

Prayer is one of the oldest human practices, with evidence showing that people have been engaging in it for thousands of years — at least since the dawn of recorded history.

Ancient origins
In early civilizations, prayer was a central part of religious and cultural life. Ancient Egyptians recorded prayers on papyrus, Greeks and Romans offered prayers to gods and goddesses, and many societies combined prayer with rituals and offerings. These prayers were not just words but expressions of devotion, seeking guidance, protection, and blessings.

Christian and Jewish influences
Early Christian communities inherited Jewish prayer traditions, such as the use of Psalms, the Shema, and daily prayer times. The Apostles, the Didache, and Church Fathers like Origen and Tertullian shaped Christian prayer practices, emphasizing both communal and personal prayer.

Prayer tools and traditions
The earliest Christian devices for counting prayers, like prayer ropes, date back to the 3rd–4th centuries CE among the Desert Fathers, who prayed 150 psalms daily and used knots or pebbles to track them. This tradition evolved into the rosary in the Middle Ages.

Global reach
Across the world, prayer has been practiced in diverse forms — from Hindu mantras to Buddhist meditation — in over 10,000 religions. Today, prayer remains a widespread global practice, with billions of people engaging in it daily.

From ancient Egypt to modern times, prayer has been a constant thread in human spiritual life. When you find yourself faced with a difficult passage in your life, say a little pray. You will feel lifted up and more hopeful. I say a little prayer for you.

Peace and Love,

Skylark

At 60 and beyond, prayer can help us where words escape us.

SKYLARK'S INTERIOR DECORATING TIP OF THE WEEK

The Italians aren't so fussy about things being perfect. The patina on walls and ceilings create an aging effect. It's a signature style in Italian interior decorating. Don't be afraid to let your walls fade.

Lyrics

The moment I wake up
Before I put on my makeup (makeup)
I say a little prayer for you
And while combing my hair now
And wondering what dress to wear now (wear now)
I say a little prayer for you
(Forever) forever (forever) yeah
(You'll stay in my heart and I will love you)
(Forever) forever (and ever) ever
(We never will part, oh, how I love you)
(Together) together, (together) together
(That's how it must be, to live without you)
(Would only mean heartbreak for me) Ooh
I run for the bus, dear
When while riding I think of us, dear (us, dear)
I say a little prayer for you
And at work I just take time
And all through my coffee break time (break time)
I say a little prayer for you
(Forever) forever (forever) and ever
(You'll stay in my heart and I will love you)
(Forever) forever (and ever) ever
(We never will part, oh, how I love you)
(Together) together, (together) together
(That's how it must be, to live without you)
(Would only mean heartbreak for me)
Nobody but me
(Forever) forever (and ever) ever
(You'll stay in my heart and I will love you)
(Forever) forever (and ever) ever
(We never will part, oh, how I love you)
(Together) together, (together) together
(That's how it must be to live without you)
(Would only mean heartbreak for me)
My darling, believe me (believe me)
For me there is no one but you
Please love me true
I'm in love with you (answer my prayer)
Answer my prayer, baby (answer my prayer)
Say you'll love me true (answer my prayer)
Answer my prayer, baby (answer my prayer)
(Forever) forever (and ever) ever
(You'll stay in my heart and I will love you) ever
(Forever) forever (and ever) ever
(We never will part, oh, how I love you)
(Together) together, (together) together
(That's how it must be to live without you)
(Would only mean heartbreak for me)
Oh, nobody but me
My darling, believe me (believe me)
For me there is no one but you
Please love me true
This is my prayer (answer my prayer)
Answer my prayer now, baby (answer my prayer, baby)
This is my prayer (answer my prayer, baby)
Answer it right now, baby (answer my prayer, baby)
Say you'll love me true (answer my prayer, baby)
This is my prayer, baby (answer my prayer, baby)
I'm in love with you (answer my prayer)

MY BRAND - SKYLARK LIVE

I created my brand, Skylark Live, when I turned 60 years old and noticed a profound shift in this age. I wanted to talk about it and share what I was experiencing with the hope of helping other women as well. My brand consists of a weekly newsletter and a monthly vlog designed to motivate and inspire women over 60 to thrive in mature ageing through knowledge and self-awareness. I am open to conducting in-person conversations called The Skylark Sessions. These can be held in someone’s home or at a local library or senior center. To be continued.

Skylark Live Weekly Newsletter - My weekly newsletter, 60 and Beyond with Skylark - Living Life Inside and Outside the Home, features articles about human interest, nature, general observations, inspiration, goals, motivation, places I've been to, and ideas I want to explore. I open to ideas of what to write about, so let me know. I represent Bay Shore and towns beyond. There is also a calendar of events. I throw in Italian words, too, because I love the language and all things Italian. Bella Italia! As a paid subscriber, you will receive my newsletter each week in your email.
