Snow Day

SKYLARK'S ARTICLE OF THE WEEK - SNOW DAY

Remember when you were a kid and you woke up and peaked out your window only to find the ground covered in snow. You could smell it. Snow day! What an exhilarating feeling. At 60 and beyond, we can still feel the exhilaration a snowy day can evoke. We just have to act more like an adult when we go out in it. Bundle up and be careful you don't slip and fall. We fall harder now.

The Governor of New York declared a State of Emergency on Friday, and we received a Rave Alert that our school (I work at a college) would be closed Monday and that we had to telecommute. Work from home? I thought it would be an adult snow day.

The first thing that came to mind as I awoke Monday morning was, oh God, I have to dig out my car. I was pretty certain we'd have to go into work on Tuesday. For hundreds of kids across Long Island, it was a snow day. Instead of grabbing a shovel, they grabbed sleds and flying saucers. I remember those days. Some things never get old.

It was very cold Monday. I took my time getting ready to step outside to dig out. I bundled up in a coat I bought in the 80's in New York City on one of the coldest days I ever remember. I don't think I've felt that cold ever since. I digress. I was commuting into the city at the time and didn't dress warm enough. On my lunch hour, I stopped into Boulton's. That was the boutique of the day. I was prepared to buy any coat I could find that was warmer than the one I had on. There it was. A long, brown faux fur. I hate faux fur. But this baby is the warmest coat other than a real fur, which I'll never own. I only wear this beast on the very coldest days. And I always get compliments. They should only know how much I hate this coat. It's so not me. Did I say how much I hate faux fur?

In spite of how much I don't love winter, I'm enjoying it this year, snow and all. It brings people out. The apartment community I live in is friendly. My neighbor offered to help me shovel. Of course, I let him. The snow was heavy. Working together is always more fun.

Be aware of the risks for older adults while being out in cold weather and shoveling snow:

  1. Heart Health: Shoveling snow can increase the heart rate and strain the heart, especially for those over 45 or with preexisting heart conditions. It is recommended to avoid shoveling if possible and consider using a snowblower or hiring a professional service.
  2. Falls: Falls are a leading cause of injuries in winter, particularly for older adults. It is advised to walk on shoveled sidewalks, use handrails, and wear non-skid footwear. Avoid snow-covered pathways when possible.
  3. Frostbite and Hypothermia: Both conditions can occur from prolonged exposure to cold. Recognize the signs of frostbite and hypothermia and take appropriate action to prevent them.
  4. Emergency Preparedness: Older adults should have an emergency plan and kit ready, including a battery-operated radio, flashlight, food, water, first-aid kit, and a plan for how to get help if needed.

At 60 and beyond, we may still feel young and don't take these risks seriously. But we should. We start to lose balance, and our muscles are not as strong. And our precious heart. We must protect it.

Peace and Love,

Skylark

At 60 and beyond, taking good care of ourselves while we're out in the snow can make it a more fun experience.

SKYLARK'S PICK OF THE WEEK

My pick of the week is the Monet and Venice exhibit at The Brooklyn Museum. Sunday, February 1st is the last day of this renowned exhibit that won't come around again for a long time. I hope to make it. Visit www.brooklynmuseum.org for information.

SKYLARK'S HIGHLIGHT OF THE WEEK

Of course, the highlight of the week was the major snowfall that dumped 12" of snow on Long Island. With record temperatures, it should be around for a while. Happy winter.

SKYLARK'S INSPIRATIONAL QUOTE OF THE WEEK

SKYLARK'S PRAYER OF THE WEEK

Dear God,

As the snow lingers, please keep all drivers and workers on our roads safe. Amen.

SKYLARK'S ITALIAN PHRASE OF THE WEEK

English: Snow is not just for kids.

Italian: La neve non è solo per i bambini.

SKYLARK'S INTERIOR DECORATING TIP OF THE WEEK

It's ok to mix periods of design in your home, but it helps to know the history of design, so you know what mixes well. Read magazine articles. Take a course. Read a book. Mixing pieces can be fun and intentional.

SKYLARK'S QUESTION OF THE WEEK

What periods of design do you like to mix in your home? Please put your answer in the Comment section under this post. I'd love to hear from you.

SKYLARK'S SONG OF THE WEEK - MACARTHUR PARK by RICHARD HARRIS

Lyrics

Spring was never waiting for us, girl
It ran one step ahead
As we followed in the dance
Between the parted pages and were pressed
In love's hot, fevered iron
Like a striped pair of pants
MacArthur's Park is melting in the dark
All the sweet, green icing flowing down
Someone left the cake out in the rain
I don't think that I can take it
'Cause it took so long to bake it
And I'll never have that recipe again, oh no
I recall the yellow cotton dress
Foaming like a wave
On the ground around your knees
The birds like tender babies in your hands
And the old men playing checkers by the trees
MacArthur's Park is melting in the dark
All the sweet, green icing flowing down
Someone left the cake out in the rain
I don't think that I can take it
'Cause it took so long to bake it
And I'll never have that recipe again, oh no
There would be another song for me
For I will sing it
There would be another dream for me
Someone will bring it
I will drink the wine while it is warm
And never let you catch me looking at the sun
And after all the loves of my life
After all the loves of my life, you'll still be the one
I will take my life into my hands and I will use it
I will win the worship in their eyes and I will lose it
I will have the things that I desire
And my passion flow like rivers through the sky
And after all the loves of my life
Oh, after all the loves of my life
I'll be thinking of you and wondering why
MacArthur's Park is melting in the dark
All the sweet, green icing flowing down
Someone left the cake out in the rain
I don't think that I can take it
'Cause it took so long to bake it
And I'll never have that recipe again
(Oh no)
(Oh no)

MY BRAND - SKYLARK LIVE

I created my brand, Skylark Live, when I turned 60 years old and noticed a profound shift in this age. I wanted to talk about it and share what I was experiencing with the hope of helping other women as well. My brand consists of a weekly newsletter and a monthly vlog designed to motivate and inspire women over 60 to thrive in mature ageing through knowledge and self-awareness. I am open to conducting in-person conversations called The Skylark Sessions. These can be held in someone’s home or at a local library or senior center. To be continued.

Skylark Live Weekly Newsletter - My weekly newsletter, 60 and Beyond with Skylark - Living Life Inside and Outside the Home, features articles about human interest, nature, general observations, inspiration, goals, motivation, places I've been to, and ideas I want to explore. I open to ideas of what to write about, so let me know. I represent Bay Shore and towns beyond. There is also a calendar of events. I throw in Italian words, too, because I love the language and all things Italian. Bella Italia! As a subscriber, you will receive my newsletter each Wednesday morning in your email. That gives you a head's up. You can also advertise your business or event on my newsletter. Just click this link to subscribe: For updates, subscribe to our free newsletter! You can also become a paying subscriber.

Skylark Live Monthly Vlog - My first Monday-of-the month vlog is a recap of the articles I've written in my newsletter throughout the previous month. Then, I introduce a unique topic for the current month's vlog. You can find some of my vlogs on my YouTube channel. I also post them on my social media platforms.
