SKYLARK'S ARTICLE OF THE WEEK - LIVING AMONG THE FLORA AND FAUNA

It's November. The month of Thanksgiving. Let us give thanks for the beauty that surrounds us among the flora and fauna.

After living in the city for over 35 years, I never thought I'd move back to Long Island. One of the greatest blessings of living here is the natural world around us. If you take time to notice, we are surrounded by a vast variety of flora and fauna that enriches our lives. It helps ease the burdens of daily life.

Flora refers to all the plant life in a particular region or time period, while fauna refers to all the animal life. Collectively, flora and fauna are known as biota. Biota is an Italian word that refers to the plants and animals of a particular region or time period, encompassing all living organisms in a specific environment. It is also the name of several organizations, including a sustainable aquaculture company called Biota and the BIOTA Institute which conducts research on life's origins.

Let's delargare ulteriormente il tema. Let's take a deeper dive into flora and fauna.

Flora

  • Definition: All the plant life in a region, including trees, shrubs, grasses, ferns, and mosses.
  • Etymology: The term comes from Flora, the Roman goddess of flowers.
  • Examples: Cacti, roses, chestnut trees, and grasses.

Fauna

  • Definition: All the animal life in a region, including mammals, fish, birds, and insects.
  • Etymology: The term comes from Fauna, a Roman goddess of fertility.
  • Examples: Bears, sharks, eagles, and nematodes.

Key relationship and Benefits

  • Flora and fauna are integral parts of an ecosystem.
  • Flora uses carbon dioxide to produce oxygen, while fauna produces carbon dioxide through respiration.
  • The term Funga is the corresponding term for fungi.
  • Flora and fauna play a crucial role in our daily lives by providing essential services that support our well-being. Here are some ways in which they affect our lives.

Flora

  • Immune System Support: Flora modulates the immune system by influencing the production of cytokines, which are signaling molecultes that coordinate the immune response.
  • Disease Prevention: Flora contributes to disease prevention through several mechanisms, including the production of antimicrobial peptides that help regulate the composition of microbiota and prevent the overgrowth of pathogenic microorganisms.
  • Nutrient Absorption: Gut microbiota play a key role in breaking down complex carbohydrates, fibers, and certain proteins.
  • Metobilic Functions: Normal flora helps in metabolizing bile acids, sterols, and xenobiotics (foreign compounds), influencing body weight, fat storage, and blood glucose levels.

Fauna

  • Pollination: Nearly 75% of global food crops depend on pollination by wild animals.
  • Medical Value: Some animals are vital in the production of medications, such as venom from cobras.
  • Cultural Identity: Wildlife contributes to cultural identities and recreational activities like ecotourism and birdwatching.
  • Aesthetic Benefits: Watching animals provides comfort, and they are beautiful to look at.
  • Ecosystem Services: Wildlife provides 12 of the 18 categories of nature's contributions to people, aiding the provision of ecosystem services for well-being and survival.

Overall, flora and fauna provide a valuable role in our lives. We need them to survive. Spending time in the natural world among these elements creates a relaxing and soothing environment that we can only benefit from. Prendere una passeggiata sul lato selvaggio. Take a walk on the wild side.

Peace and Love,

Skylark

At 60 and beyond, spending time among the flora and fauna has many benefits that enhance our emotions in a positive way.
