SKYLARK'S ARTICLE OF THE WEEK - LIVING WITH FLORA AND FAUNA
It's November. The month of Thanksgiving. Let us be grateful for the wild nature that is all around us.
After living in the city for over 35 years, I never thought I'd move back to Long Island. One of the greatest blessings of living here is the natural world around us. If you take time to notice, we are surrounded by a vast array of flora and fauna. It helps ease the burdens of daily life.
Flora refers to all the plant life in a particular region or time period, while fauna refers to all the animal life. Collectively, flora and fauna are known as biota. Biota refers to the plants and animals of a particular region or time period, encompassing all living organisms in a specific environment. It is also the name of several organizations, including a sustainable aquaculture company called Biota and the BIOTA Institute which researches life's origins.
