SKYLARK'S ARTICLE OF THE WEEK - THE NEW LOVE AND SEX OVER 60
It's not the same. Sex over 60 is different. For so many reasons, having an intimate life in your 60's doesn't feel as exciting or thrilling as it once did. But, it can still be fun and sexy. You might just have to work harder at it.
I recently purchased a book called The New Love and Sex Over 60 written by Dr. Robert N. Butler, M.D. and Myrna I. Lewis. Ph.D. Both are deceased now, but two leading experts in the field have completely updated and revised the classic guide on the subject to address the needs of our changing world in the new millennium. Here is the book that speaks to your concerns about sex beyond the middle years. Inside you'll find:
- The truth about aging and how it affects sexual desire and lovemaking
- A thorough guide to common medical problems--and solutions
- New drugs that can improve and enhance sexuality--including the latest on Viagra
- Research on post-menopausal changes
- A detailed look at the procedures for easing and solving sexual problems
- Practical strategies for finding new relationships and staying sexually fit
- Advice to help your adult children understand your new relationships
Dr. Robert N. Butler was an American physician, gerontologist, psychiatrist, and author, who was the first director of the National Institute of Aging. Butler is known for his work on the social needs and the rights of the elderly and for his research on healthy aging and the dementias. He graduated from Columbia College of Columbia University where he was editor of the Columbia Daily Spectator and a member of the Philolexian Society, one of the oldest college literary and debate societies in the United States, and the oldest student group at Columbia.
Butler was a principal investigator of one of the first interdisciplinary, comprehensive, longitudinal studies of healthy community-residing older persons, conducted at the National Institute of Mental Health (1955–1966), which resulted in the landmark book Human Aging. His research helped establish the fact that senility was not inevitable with aging, but is a consequence of disease.
In 1969, he coined the term ageism to describe discrimination against seniors; the term was patterned on sexixm and racism. Butler defined "ageism" as a combination of three connected elements. Among them were prejudicial attitudes towards older people, old age, and the aging process; discriminatory practices against older people; and institutional practices and policies that perpetuate stereotypes about elderly people.
In 1975, he became the founding Director of the National Institute on Aging (NIA) of the National Institutes of Health, where he remained until 1982. At the National Institute on Aging he established Alzheimer's disease as a national research priority.
In 1982, he founded the Department of Geriatrics and Adult Development at the Mount Sinai Medical Center, the first department of geriatrics in a United States medical school. In addition, Butler helped found the Alzheimer's Disease Association, the American Association of Geriatric Psychiatry, the American Federation for Aging Research and the Alliance for Aging Research.
Butler was the founder, chief executive officer, and president of the International Longevity Center-USA, a non-profit international organization created to educate people on how to live longer and better. The International Longevity Center-USA is now housed at the Robert N. Butler Columbia Aging Center, a university-wide center of Columbia University based at the Mailman School of Public Health.
Dr. Butler's wife and co-author of The New Love and Sex Over 60, Myrna I. Lewis was born in Fountain, Minnesota. She was an undergraduate of the University of Minnesota and received her Masters and Doctorate at the Columbia University School of Social Work. She was co-author of Aging and Mental Health, the first comprehensive textbook on the subject as well as the popular "Love and Sex After 60". She devoted her life to confrontations with injustice and to understanding both the adverse events and possibilities of the lives of women, especially in their middle and later years. She taught at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine and was an active alumna of the Columbia University School of Social Work. She worked with mental health teams in Northeast Washington and enjoyed an extensive psychotherapy practice, 1968-1982. Dr. Lewis was also a member of the Board of Directors, management and staff of the International Longevity Center. She was a powerful voice on behalf of older women. I was unable to find a picture of Myrna.
In a world where so many of our fellow human beings live with threats of terror and destruction, take time to be grateful for your life, and have more sex when you can. You may be getting older, but love and sex are still a vital part of our lives. Let Love Rule.
Peace and Love,
Skylark
At 60 and Beyond, making love may not be as steamy as it once was, but it can still be hot.
SKYLARK'S PICK OF THE WEEK - HOTEL TRANSYLVANIA
Saturday, October 25, the film Hotel Transylvania will be showing at the Unitarian Universalist Society at 28 Brentwood Road in Bay Shore. Wear a costume, and bring a snack and a drink to share. The fun starts at 6:30pm. It's a free event, but there is a $20 suggested donation. Please give what you can. Boo!
SKYLARK'S HIGHLIGHT OF THE WEEK
The highlight of the week was taking a walk with my sister last Saturday through a nearby neighborhood in Bay Shore that runs along the Great South Bay. The weather was stunning. It's Autumn. The air has a chill, and the leaves are changing vibrant colors. It seems they'll all fall at once. It was great to meet new people along our walk, too. Everyone was working in their yard. We stopped to chat with a man named Mark who was in his driveway carving a statue of a mother and child out of a tree trunk. He invited us into his garage to see other things he's made. They are for sale. He does craft shows now and then. I hope to see him again.

SKYLARK'S INTERIOR DECORATING TIP OF THE WEEK
Red is a bold color. Some people love it while others don't. I love red and have lots of red touches in my home. Don't be afraid to go deeper into color. You can also mix different tones of red. Go ahead. Get red.
SKYLARK'S SONG OF THE WEEK - LET LOVE RULE by LENNY KRAVITZ
LYRICS
Love is gentle as a rose
And love can conquer any war
It's time to take a stand
Brothers and sisters join hands
We got to let love rule
Let love rule
We got to let love rule
Let love rule
Love transcends all space and time
And love can make a little child smile
Can't you see this won't go wrong
But we got to be strong
We can't do it alone
We got to let love rule
Let love rule
We got to let love rule
Let love rule
You got to, got to, got to
(Let love rule)
Let love rule
You got to, got to, got to
Let love rule
(Let love rule)
Let love rule
You got to, got to, got to
Yes, yeah yeah
You got to, yeah
You got to, got to, got to, yeah
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
Let love rule!
