SKYLARK'S ARTICLE OF THE WEEK - WE'RE HAVING A HEAT WAVE
Fa molto caldo! That's Italian for, it's very hot.
We're having a heatwave! It's a good time to make sure your AC is working properly and that you have a clean filter. This will give you healthier, cooler air. Ah, the hazy, lazy, crazy days of summer.
A major heat wave is well under way in our region, and it shows no signs of stopping. In fact, we're staying in the 90s all week and well into next week, so stay close to air conditioning if you can or make sure you have a good working fan. It’s not just the sweltering temperatures across the tri-state area: humidity is making this surge in temperatures dangerous.
This week kicked off with a heat advisory, and it will remain in place for much of the tri-state area. And although the temps should hang around the 90s, it'll feel closer to 100 with very little let up. Baby, it's hot outside!
This level of stifling heat is concerning for any amount of time, but is especially devastating when it persists over multiple days. Heat takes a physical toll on the body that is only exacerbated by prolonged exposure, so again, make sure your AC is working properly, and stay hydrated. Don't forget to check on your garden, too. Watering is best in the evening when temperatures are lower. Your flowers will thank you.
In a heatwave like this, it's a good idea to check on your relatives and neighbors as well, especially if they tend to be more vulnerable to the heat. Make sure they have plenty of cool drinks and that their AC is working. It doesn't take much to become overwhelmed by persistent heat.
It's not just the daytime highs that will make this week difficult — it’s the lows, too. Overnight temperatures are staying in the mid to upper 70s, so there's not much relief as we go to bed. A ceiling fan can help and so can a small fan on your night stand.
If you have grandchildren, it might be fun to join them running through the sprinkler. Public pools across Long Island and New York City are open, so why not take a dip. I usually spend time in the kiddy pool. I find it more relaxing, and it feels good to fully submerge my body in shallow water. The kids don't mind, and I enjoy hearing them play in the water.
These long, hot summer days remind me of when I was younger. We didn't have air conditioning in our home. My parents would leave all the windows open, and the front door was never closed, even at night. I can remember seeing a praying mantis on our screen door. That's one of my fondest memories of summer. Bella Estate!
Peace and Love,
Skylark
At 60 and Beyond, we need to be creative with ways to cool off in a heat wave. Don't be too shy to run through the sprinkler like a child.

SKYLARK'S SONG OF THE WEEK - HOT FUN IN THE SUMMERTIME
LYRICS
End of the spring
And here she comes back
Hi, hi, hi, hi there
Them summer days
Those summer days
That's when I had
Most of my fun, back
Hi, hi, hi, hi there
Them summer days
Those summer days
I cloud nine when I want to
Out of school, yeah
County fair in the country sun
And everything is true
Ooh, yeah, yeah
Hot fun in the summertime
Hot fun in the summertime
Hot fun in the summertime
Hot fun in the summertime
First of the fall
And then she goes back
Bye, bye, bye, bye there
Them summer days
Those summer days
Boop-boop-boop-boop
When I want to
Out of school
County fair in the country sun
And everything is cool
Ooh, yeah, yeah
Hot fun in the summertime (hey, hey, hey, ooh)
Hot fun in the summertime (ooh, yeah)
Hot fun in the summertime
