Self-Care

SKYLARK'S ARTICLE OF THE WEEK - SELF-CARE

Self-care is extremely important for our overall well-being as we age, especially over 60. It shows self-love and respect, and it puts you first. We must take good care of ourselves as we grow into older age so we can take care of others, both friends and family, who will eventually need our help as they age, too. If we don't take care of ourselves, who will?

Getting good rest, eating well, exercising, and remembering to take deep breaths are all good for us. I love meditation and yoga poses. But sometimes you may need to talk to a friend. Sometimes there's nothing better than having a good rant with someone who will listen to what's bugging you. Don't forget to make yourself a cup of coffee or tea before you make that call.

Most of us think we have all the answers to our problems, but that's not always the case. Sometimes even a total stranger can give us great advice. What's the best piece of advice you've ever received? How did it impact you? I have always felt that writing things down on paper is one of the best ways to express our feelings. Journaling is very effective, and it can relieve the stress of keeping thoughts in our mind that can cause anxiety. This practice can help us take good care of ourselves in the moment. This is some of the best advice I've ever received.

If journaling isn't your bag, then try writing down at least 5 things that you aren't currently doing and explain why or how they can help you in your self-care and self-discovery journey. Start with the first thing and then go down the list. This can also be a good practice when you have a lot to do. Lists are a great way to be efficient and productive.

I also find doing something you love is great self-care. Last Saturday, my car broke down...again. I was very upset. So, I rented a car and drove to the beach. I stayed there until sunset. Alone. It was a gorgeous day. The temperature was perfect, and the solitude was just what the doctor ordered. All was well with the world. Except my car. The beach always makes me feel better. I knew I would be able to relax here and find my center, and I did. I know how to take care of myself when I need self-care the most.

The next time you find yourself upset or angry about something, do what makes you happy. Happiness is a choice in any circumstance. Just like good self-care.

Peace and Love,

Skylark

At 60 and Beyond, we require good self-care to thrive just like flowers needs water to grow.

SKYLARK'S SONG OF THE WEEK -GREATEST LOVE OF ALL by WHITNEY HOUSTON

LYRICS

I believe the children are our future
Teach them well and let them lead the way
Show them all the beauty they possess inside
Give them a sense of pride to make it easier
Let the children's laughter remind us how we used to be

Everybody searching for a hero
People need someone to look up to
I never found anyone who fulfill my needs
A lonely place to be
And so I learned to depend on me

I decided long ago
Never to walk in anyone's shadows
If I fail, if I succeed
At least I'll live as I believe
No matter what they take from me
They can't take away my dignity

Because the greatest love of all
Is happening to me
I found the greatest love of all
Inside of me
The greatest love of all
Is easy to achieve
Learning to love yourself
It is the greatest love of all

I believe the children are our future
Teach them well and let them lead the way
Show them all the beauty they possess inside
Give them a sense of pride to make it easier
Let the children's laughter remind us how we used to be

I decided long ago
Never to walk in anyone's shadows
If I fail, if I succeed
At least I'll live as I believe
No matter what they take from me
They can't take away my dignity

Because the greatest love of all
Is happening to me
I found the greatest love of all
Inside of me

The greatest love of all
Is easy to achieve
Learning to love yourself
Is the greatest love of all

And if, by chance, that special place
That you've been dreaming of
Leads you to a lonely place
Find your strength in love

ABOUT MY BRAND, SKYLARK LIVE

My brand, Skylark Live, was born out of my turning 60 and noticing a profound shift in this age. I wanted to talk about it and share what I was experiencing with the hope of helping other women as well. My brand consists of a weekly newsletter and a monthly vlog designed to motivate and inspire women over 60 to thrive in older age through knowledge and self-awareness. I’m in the process of formulating in-person presentations called The Skylark Sessions. These can be conducted in someone’s home, local library, or senior center.

Weekly Newsletter - My weekly newsletter, Skylark Live Town News, features articles about human interest, nature, general observations, inspiration, motivation, music, places I've been to, and ideas I want to explore. I represent Bay Shore and towns beyond. There is also a calendar of events. I throw in Italian words, too, because I love the language and all things Italian. Bella Italia! As a paying subscriber, you will receive my newsletter each Wednesday morning in your email. That gives you a head's up. You can also advertise your business or event on my newsletter.
