The Bay Shore Historical Society will meet on Thursday, May 15th, 2025, at 7:00 PM at the Bay Shore - Brightwaters Public Library (1 South Country Rd., Brightwaters, NY)
Guest Speaker Marsha Collock will present “Films of the Great Depression: 1929-1939.” This presentation will offer a look at the state of the country during the Great Depression and the role that movies played, both as a reflection of the times and as a method of pleasure and escape from the realities of the harsh conditions many had to endure. During these hard times, Hollywood experienced a golden age and produced films that have stood the test of time.
Our guest presenter, Marsha Collock is a classic film aficionado and serves as a clerk at the Village of Babylon Historical & Preservation Society. Marsha is a lifelong resident of Long Island as well as a lifelong follower of classic films. She does not consider herself a historian in the classical sense, but instead, a Fan with a capital "F" who has a vast storage of knowledge on the subject. She is the author of the classic film blog "A Person in the Dark" and is the curator at the Village of Babylon Historical and Preservation Society Museum.
To learn more about Bay Shore's film history visit the Gibson-Mack-Holt on Tuesdays & Saturdays from 1 pm-4 pm to see our new movie theater exhibit room.
