A Partial Lunar Eclipse this Friday, November 19, 2021 for Night Owls

Image

Night owls will get a spectacular view of the partial lunar eclipse early Friday, November 19, 2021 with a duration from 1:02am to 6:58am. The eclipse will occur towards a micro-moon. This will be the longest partial lunar eclipse since 1440, and the longest until 2669; however, many eclipses, including the upcoming November 2022 lunar eclipse will have a longer period of umbral (the fully shaded inner region of a shadow cast by an opaque object, especially the area on the earth or moon experiencing the total phase of an eclipse) contact at next to 3 hours, 40 minutes. This eclipse has a long partial phase primarily because it is entirely partial. Any total eclipse includes a period of more than 97% partiality like the maximum eclipse point of this one. Unlike a total solar eclipse, extended duration is not sought after by observers.

Throughout Long Island and over Bay Shore, the partial lunar eclipse begins early Friday, November 19, 2021 at 1:02am. Maximum viewing is Friday, November 19, 2021 at 4:02am at 0.974 magnitude and ends Friday, November 19, 2021 at 6:58am. Duration is 5 hours, 56 minutes.

If you don't mind losing some sleep, this is a rare event that you won't want to miss. It's a dream come true. Happy Eclipsing!
