Pat Metheny transcended his audience to another world Sunday night at the Patchogue Theatre. From the moment he stepped on stage and grabbed one of his countless guitars, the room ignited with electricity. Side Eye, Metheny's latest project, features the phenomenal James Francies on piano and keyboards, and the thunderous Joe Dyson on drums. Mr. Metheny is master maestro as he takes center stage and commands these young musicians like a supreme conductor. Spinning new arrangements on classics like Minuano, Last Train Home, and Falcon and the Snowman mesmerized the crowd. Once the trio found the pocket, it was alchemy, and the music put you in the zone. From the cacophony of his jazz fusion to his zen-like ballads, Metheny takes you on an emotional roller coaster as his music crescendos and then sets you free. The audience was captivated and enraptured by every song. The show closed with the gorgeous Are You Going With Me from the Off Ramp album as the room exploded into applause with a standing ovation.
Pat Metheny has been going strong for over 40 years. You could say he just gets better with age, but he has always been this good. His undying curiosity of the guitar may take you in new directions, but he always leaves you with the same other-worldly feeling you had the very first time you saw him. Time knows no boundaries with Pat Metheny. He defies it.
