The Power of Love

Love is the most powerful force in the universe. At 60 and beyond, we may find ourselves in a committed relationship or just coming out of one, in a marriage or relationship that has stood the test of time, or in a relationship where the luster has faded. Some of us have never been in love. No matter where you are, it’s important to remain focused on loving yourself. There’s no one else that can love you more than you love yourself. The power of love is necessary in our lives.

Falling in love is wonderful. It leaves us feeling alive and filled with sensuality. It gives us a sense of well-being. The candle burns bright in the beginning, but it can fade over time and hopefully, a deeper sense of commitment and compassion takes over. Love can find new meaning with the passage of time. There will be times when you don’t feel love for your partner and then there will be times of great tenderness. It can be the greatest lesson in love to endure a relationship through the ups and downs of life. And the same goes for loving yourself.

What happens when you lose a loved one? I recall a story I heard about an elderly man who had recently lost his wife, and he was very lonely. He was in the supermarket and a little girl, and her mother, were passing him in a shopping cart and the little girl smiled at the man and demanded a hug. In that moment, there was a bond between the two of them. A bond of love. They see each other once a week now, and he has become very close to the family. Now what can explain this? It transcends reasoning. My Dad used to say, “love is a scratch you can’t itch.” Its definition can be elusive, but we know that love is a powerful and necessary force in our lives.

Peace and Love,
