Super Bowl Sunday kicked off to a snowy start, and Bay Shore was covered in white by mid-day. The roads remained clear, but you could hear cars driving through the wet streets. Temperatures remained fairly mild, but's that's going to change come Monday when they drop below freezing. Long Island's weather can be erratic, and sometimes it feels like all four seasons in a week. But Spring is close, so don't fret.
Chances are you parked yourself in front of your TV surrounded by friends and family to watch the big game this Sunday. Or maybe not. The Super Bowl is the biggest day of sports broadcasting in the United States. But this year might be the biggest of them all since this is the first time the country's biggest sporting event is happening at the same time as the Winter Olympics, one of the biggest world events. Maybe you prefer the downhill to the touchdown.
Here's a little history on both of these iconic events. The Super Bowl has served as the final game of every NFL season since 1966, replacing the NFL Championship Game. Beginning in 2022, the game will be played on the second Sunday in February. Prior Super Bowls were played on Sundays in early to mid-January from 1967 to 1978, late January from 1979 to 2003, and the first Sunday of February from 2004 to 2021. Not really sure why this has changed. In any case, the winning team is awarded the Vince Lombardi Trophy named after the infamous coach who won the first two Super Bowls. The creation of the Olympics was inspired by the ancient Olympic Games of the Ancient Greeks, held in Olympia, Greece from the 8th century BC to the 4th century AD. Baron Pierre de Coubertin founded the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in 1894, leading to the first modern Games in Athens in 1896. The Olympic games are now played all over the world in a host country. But you already knew that.
The winter games or the football game, whichever one you choose, I hope the best team wins!
Happy Valentine's Day!
Peace and Love,
Skylark
