The Big Dig Out

Image

Bay Shore got two feet of snow this weekend, and many towns across Long Island got slammed with even more. It felt like the lost weekend of Doctor Zhivago. I was up before sunrise on Sunday morning, and there were very few cars on the road. As the day awakened, people started to step out to their cars and begin the big dig out. If you live in an apartment complex like I do, then you know how community comes together during times like this. Sometimes extreme events bring out the best in us. It's also a good opportunity to get to know the people who live around you by helping shovel walkways and parking spots together.

What is it about a major event that brings people together? Is it a natural inclination, or do we thrive on helping each other? I think it's a combination of both. Deep down, we feel better when we help others. We're taught as children to share, so perhaps this lesson is ingrained in us early on. Or maybe we feel vulnerable and want to reach out to our neighbors who are experiencing the same things we are. Let's face it, everyone on Long Island was affected by this storm, and we were basically stranded for the weekend, so why not pitch in.

The positive side of a weekend like this is it also gives us the chance to get things done inside. I wrote more pages in a memoir I'm working on and cleaned out a file of papers that I haven't looked at in a year. I started to read a new book and prepared for a class I'm taking. I hope that whatever this time allowed, you were able to use it wisely. I was going to bake, but I would have eaten way too many chocolate chip cookies. Maybe during the next snowstorm. Not so fast, wise guy. Let's dig out of this big one first.

Stay safe and have a great snowy week.

Peace and Love,
