SKYLARK'S ARTICLE OF THE WEEK - FELICE OTTOBRE!
Felice Ottobre! Happy October! The leaves are starting to turn yellow and fall off the trees filling the gutters that line the roads. The plants in my garden are starting to fade, but the roses are still in bloom. Fall is upon us, and it's time for pumpkin everything.
Before the 16th century, harvest was the term usually used to refer to the season, as it is common in other West Germanic languages to this day. However, as more people gradually moved from working the land to living in towns, the word harvest lost its reference to the time of year and came to refer only to the actual activity of reaping, and autumn, as well as fall, began to replace it as a reference to the season.
The alternative word fall for the season traces its origins to old Germanic languages. The exact derivation is unclear, with the Old English fiæll or feallan and the Old Norse fall all being possible candidates. However, these words all have the meaning 'to fall from a height' and are clearly derived either from a common root or from each other. The term came to denote the season in 16th-century England, a contraction of Middle English expressions like "fall of the leaf" and "fall of the year". Compare the origin of spring from "spring of the leaf" and "spring of the year".
During the 17th century, English settlers began emigrating to the new North American colonies and took the English language with them. While the term fall gradually became nearly obsolete in Britain, it became the more common term in North America. The name backend, a once common name for the season in Northern England, has today been largely replaced by the name autumn.
Autumn, especially in poetry, has often been associated with melancholia. The possibilities and tranquility of summer are gone, and the chill of winter is on the horizon. As the skies turn grey and the sun sets earlier, a lot of us turn inward, both physically and mentally. October can be a transitional month that gives us the opportunity to adjust to the change of season. I think it's a gorgeous month with color and beauty everywhere we look. It's a time to get cozy.
And let us not forget that October is the month of Halloween. Everything seems to be made of pumpkin in this month. You can't escape it. I especially love putting pumpkins in my garden as I anticipate that "scary" day when children will ring my doorbell and say trick or treat! I love seeing their costumes.
If you are on Long Island, Harbes Farms is a great place to visit in Autumn. They have it all from pumpkin picking to apple picking, corn mazes, and pies! It truly is am a-maze-ing place. Visit www.harbesfamilyfarm.com for more information.
We've been very lucky to have such warm temperatures in the past week. The sunsets have been vivid with red and orange ablaze. I have been walking just after sunset as things begin to settle down. Squirrels prepare their winter stash as they gather nuts and hide them in the ground. Stray kittens play in the grass, and you can hear the sound of crickets in the distance. Ottobre is here.
Peace and Love,
Skylark

SKYLARK'S SONG OF THE WEEK - MOONDANCE by VAN MORRISON
LYRICS
Well, it's a marvelous night for a Moondance
With the stars up above in your eyes
A fantabulous night to make romance
'Neath the cover of October skies
And all the leaves on the trees are falling
To the sound of the breezes that blow
And I'm trying to please to the calling
Of your heartstrings that play soft and low
And all the night's magic seems to whisper and hush
And all the soft moonlight seems to shine in your blush
Can I just have one a' more Moondance with you, my love
Can I just make some more romance with a-you, my love
Well, I wanna make love to you tonight
I can't wait 'til the morning has come
And I know that the time is just right
And straight into my arms you will run
And when you come my heart will be waiting
To make sure that you're never alone
There and then all my dreams will come true, dear
There and then I will make you my own
And every time I touch you, you just tremble inside
And I know how much you want me that you can't hide
One more Moondance with you in the moonlight
On a magic night
La, la, la, la in the moonlight
On a magic night
Can't I just have one more dance with you my love
