Winter's Sky Show

SKYLARK'S ARTICLE OF THE WEEK - WINTER'S SKY SHOW

The best part of winter is lighting candles and incense. At least that's what I love about winter. I love the outdoors, but I don't like being outside when it's below 32 degrees. It's been way too cold this week. And then we lost our heat. Thank God we have a space heater. The sky has been especially beautiful though. That makes it all worthwhile.

I'm born in winter on December 26th. My mother went to the ER late Christmas night in 1957. I came into the world around 3:15am. I love celebrating Christmas and my birthday together. It's always been a special time of year for me. Sometimes people ask me if I feel that I get gipped on my birthday. No way, I say. I love this time of year.

So, let's get back to winter. I don't remember it being this cold for this long, especially not temperatures around 12 degrees. Ouch! For me, there's no way to embrace these cool temps. Layered clothing helps.

The sky has been beautiful this month. That's the blessing for a harsh winter so far. As 2025 began, it brought with it the first full moon of the year. 2025's first full moon was the last of four consecutive supermoons, according to NASA. But it's a pretty eventful lunar phase.

The full moon has a lot going on, which would make anyone want to howl with delight, especially since this month's moon was known as the "wolf" moon. It's called the wolf moon because of the idea that during January's long, cold and dark nights, wolves make sure everyone can hear them. I'm not sure how true that is, but it sounds good.

Here are some wise words from Nasa.

This coming Saturday on January 25, Earth is about to see a large planetary alignment with several planets visible in the skies above to the naked eye. Six planets will make up what is unofficially referred to by professional and amateur astronomers as a planetary parade, according to StarWalk. “Planets always appear along a line in the sky, so the ‘alignment’ isn’t special,” NASA reported. “What’s less common is seeing four or five bright planets at once, which doesn’t happen every year. Is it a “planet parade”? This isn’t a technical term in astronomy, so call it what you wish!"

Mars, Jupiter, Uranus, Neptune, Venus and Saturn should be seen in alignment, with the four closest to Earth (excluding Uranus and Neptune) all visible from Earth without the aid of a telescope or high-powered binoculars, StarWalk wrote.

Mars should be seen along the eastern horizon in the constellation Gemini, while Jupiter should be spotted higher in the sky in the constellation Taurus, according to the space app. Uranus should be visible inside Aries. The other three planets should be visible towards the western horizon: Neptune within Pisces, Saturn and Venus both seen close in Aquarius.

As we embrace this very cold weather, take some time to enjoy being home. Maybe read a book or two, decorate, clean out that closet that you've been afraid to open, or immerse yourself in some racy stuff on Netflix. They've got plenty of it. For adults only.

When you get down, look up. The sky has magic in it.

Peace and Love,

Skylark

At 60 and Beyond, winter is a good time to spend time indoors and do what makes you feel cozy and warm.

SKYLARK'S PICK OF THE WEEK

My pick this week is your public library. There are so many great books about any topic you can imagineYou probably pass your public library at least once or twice a week. Stop in next time. I have several books by my bedside. I'm almost done with one and about to begin another. Reading is a great way to pass the time indoors when it's too cold to be outside.

SKYLARK'S HIGHLIGHT OF THE WEEK

My highlight of the week is waking up to the setting moon. I have a large bay window that looks northwest, so I have a great view of the sunset and the setting moon. I like to wake up before the sun rises. On a recent morning, the moon was setting behind the pine trees that line our property. It was magical. In that moment, I said to myself, "that's all I need."

LYRICS

Sometimes in Winter
I gaze into the streets
and walk through snow and city sleet
behind your room
Sometimes in Winter
forgotten memories
remember you behind the trees
with leaves that cried
By the window once I waited for you
laughing slightly, you would run
trees alone would shield us in the meadow
makin' love in the evening sun
Now you're gone girl
and the lamp posts call your name
I can hear, them
in the spring of frozen rain
now you're gone girl
and the time's slowed down till dawn
It's a cold room and the walls ask
where you've gone
Sometimes In Winter
I love you when the good times
seem like mem'ries in the spring
that never came
Sometimes In Winter
I wish the empty streets
Would fill with laughter from the tears
that ease my pain
