Adults Love a Snow Day, Too

SKYLARK'S ARTICLE OF THE WEEK - ADULTS LOVE SNOW DAYS, TOO

A snow day makes us feel like a kid again. Or at least it stirs up memories of being a kid. I can still remember the taboggan we had growing up that my dad would take out every time it snowed. We'd head to the Robert Moses overpass and sleigh ride down what seemed to be a big, steep hill. That's where we'd all meet in a snowstorm when I was high school, too. The Heckscher Park overpass was another favorite spot in winter. I can still remember one night in particular meeting my future boyfriend there. That was just the beginning of it all.

I woke up at 5:30am just before my alarm Tuesday morning to a text from my boss. "Hi Christine. Classes are canceled, so the library will be closed today. Enjoy the snow day!" I work at a college. This is unprecedented, so I figured we must be getting a major storm. I got out of bed to look outside, and it was raining. That all changed around 8:00am. As I write this article, the snow is slowing down, and it looks like the sky is getting brighter. The ground is wet with heavy snow. I guess I should clean off my car at some point. I hope you all enjoyed the snow. I'm glad I had some hot chocolate in the cupboard.

Snow makes everything a little quieter. There are less cars on the road, so we don't hear the traffic or those dreadful sirens that have become a staple among our landscape. It's a forced day to relax or get things done at home. I made a few phone calls, paid some bills, read, and wrote. Some people lost their power. Our lights flickered mid-day when I was chatting on my cell with a girlfriend. Hers did, too, but neither of us lost power. Thank you, PSEG Long Island.

So why do adults still love snow days? Now, I can't speak for everyone, but I think snow days make most of us happy. We don't have to get dressed and leave our homes. We can do anything we want with the extra time. As we age, downtime is more precious, so snow days can be a great gift. And, if you're still working like me, any day off can feel like a snow day.

Snow days are more than just weather events; they’re portals to the past. For older adults, they offer a chance to relive cherished memories, connect with others, and find solace in the beauty of a winter wonderland. It's a great time to light some candles and curl up under your favorite blanket. So, the next time snowflakes dance outside your window, take a moment to embrace the magic and let your inner child come out to play. Snow day!

Wishing each of you a very Happy Valentine's Day! That's Amore!

Peace and Love,

Skylark

At 60 and Beyond, a snow day isn't like any other day. It's a chance to make Snow Angels.

SKYLARK'S PICK OF THE WEEK - YOUR YARD

If you're lucky enough to have your own yard, Tuesday was the perfect day to make snow angels or just get out and frolic in the snow. I'm lucky enough that although I live in an apartment, I'm on the ground floor and can walk outside in a moment. We have a large central lawn that has some pretty trees. When it snows, it looks like an enchanted forest. So, take some time to step out into your yard, even if it's just for a little while.

SKYLARK'S PRAYER OF THE WEEK

Dear God,

Please keep everyone safe in the snowstorm's aftermath. For those who have lost power, may it come on soon. For those who are homeless, may they find shelter. For those who have to work, keep us all safe on the roads. We ask this of you. Amen.

SKYLARK'S SONG OF THE WEEK - BABY, IT'S COLD OUTSIDE by DEAN MARTIN

Lyrics

I really can't stay (but baby, it's cold outside)
I've got to go away (but baby, it's cold outside)
This evening has been (been hoping that you'd drop in)
So very nice (I'll hold your hands, they're just like ice)
My mother will start to worry (beautiful, what's your hurry?)
And father will be pacing the floor (listen to the fireplace roar)
So, really I'd better scurry (beautiful, please don't hurry)
Well maybe just a half a drink more (put some records on while I pour)
The neighbors might think (baby, it's bad out there)
Say, what's in this drink? (No cabs to be had out there)
I wish I knew how (your eyes are like starlight now)
To break this spell (I'll take your hat, your hair looks swell)
I ought to say "No, no, no sir" (mind if I move in closer?)
At least I'm gonna say that I tried (what's the sense of hurtin' my pride?)
I really can't stay (baby, don't hold out)
Ah but it's cold outside (baby, it's cold outside)
I simply must go (but baby it's cold outside)
The answer is no (but baby it's cold outside)
The welcome has been (how lucky that you dropped in)
So nice and warm (look out the window at this dawn)
My sister will be suspicious (gosh, your lips look delicious)
My brother will be there at the door (waves upon the tropical shore)
My main aunt's mind is vicious (gosh, your lips are delicious)
But maybe just a cigarette (never saw such beauty before)
I gotta get home (but baby you'd freeze out there)
Say, lend me a coat (it's up to your knees out there)
You've really been great (I thrill when you touch my hand)
But don't you see? (How can you do this thing to me?)
There's bound to be talk tomorrow (think of my lifelong sorrow)
At least there'll be plenty implied (if you caught pneumonia and died)
I really can't stay (get over that old doubt)
Baby, it's cold, baby, it's cold outside!
